INFUENCES
I have been fascinated by sculpture since I was a child and was fortunate to see many of the historic sculptures in Europe and America as a teenager. I understand the power of three dimensional form as it evolved historically from the ancient Cycladic, the classical Greeks, through the Renaissance and into the 20th century. I absorbed this evolution through such sculptors as Rodin and Maillol. But the deepest influence emotionally has been the German Expressionists Ernst Barlach, and Kathy Kolwitz. The intense and disciplined search for portraying the power and strength and endurance of the female form also led me to Francisco Zuniga, the great Mexican sculptor and his monumental Indian women. Henry Moore helped me refine the human form to its basic elements and shapes. These are just a few of the influences that come automatically through my heart and hands. I also find it thrilling to see many of the fine contemporary works of our time.
